Kazakhstan's Global Rise: Historic Results in Three World Rankings
September 2026 brought Kazakhstan its strongest set of international results in a decade. In the same month, the country climbed in the WIPO Global Innovation Index, doubled its presence in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and placed 55th in Coursera's new index of AI and human skills.
For international students weighing where to study, these are independent, third-party measures of where the country's universities and its wider education system now stand.

WIPO Global Innovation Index 2026: 73rd in the world
- Kazakhstan rose 8 places to 73rd of 139 economies, its best result in the last ten years.
- It placed 2nd in Central and Southern Asia, behind only India and ahead of Iran (76th) and Uzbekistan (77th).
THE World University Rankings 2027: 10 Kazakhstani universities
- Nazarbayev University entered the global top 400 (the 376–400 band) for the first time in the history of Kazakhstan's higher education, making it the highest-ranked university in the CIS, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Its strongest scores are in research quality (84.1) and international outlook (71.0).
- 10 Kazakhstani universities are now ranked: twice as many as in the previous edition and more than three times the 2020 figure. That puts Kazakhstan ahead of every country in the region (Uzbekistan 8, Azerbaijan 5, Georgia 3, Armenia 1).
- Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University became the first medical university in Central Asia to appear in the THE global ranking (1201–1400).
The other ranked universities are Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Satbayev University, Kazakh National Agrarian Research University, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University and Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University.
Coursera Global Skills Report 2026: 55th for AI and human skills
- Kazakhstan ranked 55th of 98 countries in the new AI-Human Skills Synergy Index, ahead of Azerbaijan (65th) and Uzbekistan (93rd), and five places short of the top 50.
- The national AI-Sana programme, which unites more than 100 universities, was featured in the report as a model of state-led transformation of higher education.

What this means if you are applying
Rankings are one input, not the whole decision, but they tell you something useful: a degree from a ranked Kazakhstani university is now recognised on the same international tables as universities in Europe and Asia, and the system around it is investing heavily in research and AI skills. You can compare universities in Kazakhstan, read about Nazarbayev University, or start your application.
