Languages of instruction

Kazakhstan's universities teach in three main languages:

English — a growing share of programmes, concentrated in medicine, IT, engineering and business, and more common at postgraduate level.
Russian — widely used across many programmes and in daily life.
Kazakh — the state language, used across programmes and increasingly promoted.

The single most important thing before you apply is to check the language of instruction on the specific programme page — two programmes at the same university can differ.

English-taught programmes — where they're strongest

English-medium degrees are most common in:

Medicine (MBBS) — a major English-taught draw for international students.
IT and computer science.
Engineering and technology.
Business, economics and international programmes.

Do you need to prove your English?

For English-taught programmes, most universities require a recognised English certificate — commonly IELTS, TOEFL or C1 Advanced — typically less than 1–2 years old, meeting a minimum score set by the university. Some programmes accept alternatives (for example, prior study in English) or waive the requirement for certain applicants. Always confirm the accepted tests and scores on the admission requirements.

Do you need Russian or Kazakh?

Not for your studies, if your programme is fully in English. But some everyday Russian or Kazakh makes daily life easier — shopping, transport, admin and making local friends. Many universities offer language courses so international students can pick up the basics. Think of it as optional for academics but valuable for living well.
